In this day and age of the paid political
promoter
presenting them self as an independent commentator, or of the "from the left" and "from the right" political discourse, we seem to have lost that sense of the honest broker. Even the once "from the middle" commentators seem to have decided that it is easier to join the populous fray than exercise critical thinking.
Hence this web site. While I'm not suggesting that mine is the only rational mind out there, my hope is to once again bring back the intellectual honesty that once seemed to grace our national discourse. This is not a blog but what I hope is thoughtful commentary by an e-columnist.
In the interest of transparency, I have to be honest and say up front that the Junius quote on the home page was unceremoniously inspired by the The Globe and Mail's editorial page. It has always been a quote that I have loved and I think that it perfectly sums up the philosophy of this site.
"The subject who is truly loyal to the Chief Magistrate will neither advise nor submit to arbitrary measures"
It was either that, or Rev. Martin Niemoller's lament:
"First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."
I decided to be less somber.
As background, Junius was the pseudonym for an English political author who signed various letters to the London Public Advertiser from Jan. 1769 to Jan. 1772 attacking King George III and his ministers. I so liked the idea of that approach, that I have adopted Junius as my pseudonym. As such, this web site is
written, edited, and groomed like a fine English poodle to fluffy perfection by yours truly, Junius.
